Re: [Photoshop-beginners] Delete XMP Files?

Yes, it's a separate folder, but only has #s like 1308819.  I sorted recycle by file name, chose one to restore - # 1054733, 9/9/11, but there were no photos under that date, so that process didn't do me any good.  I'm thinking that if XMPfiles are created from images, then the ones I deleted took XMP files to recycle bin with them.  Then, when I deleted them from recycle only XMP files remained because I didn't realize what they were so skipped deleting them from recycle.  No I didn't 'Empty recycle Bin' I did it looking at the images.  (I'm abit insecure!!!)  Had I done 'Empty recycle bin' no doubt I wouldn't have this problem.  thanx

The XMP file is a 'sidecar'.  It is a separate file.  You would have the photo ABC123.RAW extension and ABC123.XMP.

If the xmp was taken with the deleted image would it have been separate?  These files in recycle are separate from images and refer to CAXMP folder.  So would have deleting images from WLPG or Pictures Library have taken the xmp file also, but it was a separate file in CAXmp folder?   WLPG deletes images from harddrive.  Deleting from pictures library also deletes from harddrive (or disk as some refer to it).  Deleting from an editing program takes more steps (and is slower) than deleting from WLPG or direct from pictures library so that's why/where I delete.  I just can't figure why all 15,000 have the same file folder references, but I am becoming more & more sure they do correspond to deleted images.

The XMP file would also contain the metadata which would include copywrite, keywords, etc.  Primarily they are used to be able for such information in cross platform (Photoshop to InDesign etc.).  Yes, if you deleted the photo from Bridge (or such) it would take the xmp file with it.  If the photo is deleted no need for the xmp file.

Clay, do I understand you?  Are you saying the XMP info pertains only to any editing not the original photo/image?  I have deleted many many either bad photos or edits recently (mostly not originals) and these XMP files (in recycle bin) could pertain to those deletes only?    Trish

I'm sure someone has already said this but if the photos that the xmp files correspond to are gone there is no problem.  If the file exists still and you did some processing the only thing that is lost is the changes/edits/metadata to the original.  The file will not be damaged.   http://www.adobe.com/products/xmp/  .  If it were me I would just empty the recycle bin.  If you 'needed' the xmp files in the recycle bin you would have known it by now.

Greg, that might work.  Except the images are no longer in Recycle, only the XMP files!  Did I goof really badly by deleteing them from Recycle and leaving only XMP files in recycle?  Thanx for your imput,  Trish

The Image file name should...Should be a part of the file name...
Example...

GJG_001.NEF would have a GJG_001.XMP file with it.
If you sort the recycle bin by file name they should match up with deleted files image files.
Any that do not match need to be restored to the folders they came from.
