Another possibility would be to use the magic wand to make a selection of
the letter, ( you probably have to delete the irrelevant selections that
would occur :) ), then convert the selection to a path. At this point you
can now manipulate the tail to get what you want.

If end of letter path is one node, than thickness may be controlled by curve
handles from the node.
Else, if end of letter path is more than one node, move two or more nodes to
preserve thickness, Alternative is to paint the extension, merge that with
raster image of letter, then select result and convert selection to path for
refinement.
