[photoshop-beginners] simple line circle

This is another one of those "How do I...?" posts. I have a page with a patterned background. I want to draw a simple line circle with the background showing through. I've tried several times & all I can get is a solid, filled in circle.

My Photoshop 7 is decaying a little but still works most of the time.
