Open photoshop. Make a new document that is 200x200 pixels. Double click it to change it to a regular layer. If you don't see your styles pallet, go to window, styles. When the styles show click on one of them. see what happens to your document. In the layers pallet you will see what effects were used for that particular style. Click on several to see the different effects. the 200x200 was just for example.

Thanks so much!
I am unexperienced with photoshop - can you tell me what you would do with the layers style set? (What function do they serve?)

From www.about.com a valentine's day collection of Photoshop presets. 1 set Brushes, 1 set shapes and 9 sets layer styles.
The link below will take you to the download page
Download the presets and place them in your:
X drive/program files/Adobe/ Adobe Photoshop XX/presets/yyyyy where X is your drive where Photoshop is installed, XX is the version of Photoshop and yyyyy is the type of preset (styles, brushes, custom shapes)
If you are running a 64 bit OS with CS4, there are two versions of PS installed. Place presets in both versions.
Program Files/Adobe/ Photoshop CS4 and Program FIles(x86)/Adobe/ Adobe Photoshop CS4
Directions are for Windows.
