It sounds like your starting layer is locked. Make the layer with the white BG active...douple click on it in the layers boxes...whatever it is called. With that U have 'unlocked' it & made it possible to delete the white bg. Select the white with the wand then delete it. I use 10% so that it won't delete any lighter colors.
