I view tutorials several times a month on Photoshop, Lightroom, etc.  I always look for new techniques or processes.  In addition if my wife needs to do some other 'learning' it would provide us with this ability.  There is no long term commitment.  So for $37.50 per month it is possible to take multiple 'classes' without additional cost.  Once there is no more return on the money it can be cancelled.

Clay, Lynda is monthly charge?  Didn't know that.  Yes LVS Online is per class but returnee's get discounts, so if you can do a lesson in a month or less, it's cheaper and you only pay for the ones of interest.  Do you usually do more than one a month?  So, it's basically which serves your needs better.  I have considered both, but felt it w/b too much added to the free online class (CS5) I'm doing right now.  Let me know which you choose if you don't mind.  Thanx for all your help,  Trish

From what I'm reading the classes at the LVS Online are a per class fee ($30 or whatever per class).  At Lynda.com it's $37.50 per month for as many classes as I wish to take.

My wife is more interested in Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.  I would do some of the Photoshop/Lightroom things.

Clay, before you sign up for lynda.com ck out LVS Online.  There might be something there she is interested in and if she's interested in CS5 (and soon CS6) ck out Yahoo group;  Learning PS For All.  You get sent explicit lessons, do them, send them to a moderator, then get the next lesson.  It's free and there's 3 levels w/25 lessons each you work at your own speed.  You can print the lessons for review.  At this point (lesson 12) it's mostly been graphics.  Try it.  I don't think it's OK to send a lesson sample, but look up Yahoo groups and ask.     Trish

At Lynda.com the premium membership is $37.50 per month and includes exercise files.  Lynda.com is runs a video you watch and also offers a transcript of the lessons.  They offer more classes than just Photoshop.  I am thinking about signing up for Lynda.com for my wife to get more 'computer' savvy. 

 

I learned Photoshop through tutorials, seminars, and books.  I am somewhat a geek type.  I have also been lucky to have some contacts with some Photoshop experts that have helped me along the way. 

 

Some of my learning has been through 'trial and error' and there isn't anything wrong with that method with things like Photoshop.  Unless you save over the original file the only thing you have lost is time if it didn't work.  There is a whole wealth of video tutorials available as well.

It's a Yahoo group: Learning PS for all.  It escaped me that is wasn't Elements (all I knew of Adobe then), but when I joined it and found out it was for CS4&5 I thought I'd get out, but everyone there encouraged me to stay and take the lessons, so I did and am glad.  You do the lessons, then send them to your moderator for approval and are then sent the next one.  The classes so far have been graphic oriented, not much photo edit oriented.  There's another Yahoo group that graduates are in, but just now it's too busy for me and I don't know enough to know what they are talking about.  Try them out if you want,    Oh, it's free!  There's another class I'm considering when they offer CS5 again - LVS Online.  I think it's $25.00 or $35.00.   Don't know lynda.com's cost.  How did you learn CS5 or whatever edit program you have?  Not trial & error I hope.        Trish

Where is this class you are taking.  This seems odd.  Bridge is typically the starting point because it is the file manager.  Lynda.com has Photoshop classes and they are very easy to follow.

Clay, thanx for the encouragement.  We'll get to bridge soon I hope.  The class has 3 levels & 75 lessons.  I'm only on lesson 12, but enjoy the difference from Elements (graphics mainly).  Do you know of other on-line classes for CS5?     Trish

If you don't use the program as you are learning you will probably continue to revert to what you 'know' which is Elements or something else.  While there are a number of things Bridge can do it's basic operation is fairly straight forward.  If you wait until you 'know' Photoshop CS5 you may never get started.  I have used Photoshop CS series since CS4 and I learn something new at least once a week. 

 

How is it that you are 'learning' Photoshop CS5?  I'm not picking on you I'm just curious.  Most classes I have seen on Photoshop (and books) start with Bridge.  Bridge is a very versatile program.

Clay, have alot of learning to do B4 trying either.  CS5 & Lightroom were highly recommended to me, but settled on CS5.  Elements was a beginner for me, but organizer is slow so deleted most files from it to try to speed it up.  Used 6 for old stuff and 8 for newer, but that didn't speed things up much.  WLPG is much faster deleteing, but editing is much more limited.  Learning CS5 is slow as doing it online and basically I'm a dummy (short-term memory loss).

The CAXMP folder is something Photoshop Elements uses as part of its organizer, face recognition and such.  CS5 doesn't create a CAXMP folder (I have used CS4, CS5 and now CS6 and don't have such a folder).  You may find Bridge a bit faster than trying to work in Photoshop elements organizer.  Bridge is a file manager and doesn't want to do all the stuff Elements organizer wants to do.  Lightroom is fast once it imports all the photos, after that any time you import (download from your memory card) I remembers a lot of info.  Give Bridge a try.

Keith, was definately t/b considered.  Others have mentioned editing programs, I am using Adobe Elements 6&8.  But do have Photoshop CS5 installed (only learning it so far) - the CAXMP file folder seems to have arrived around time I installed CS5.  Coincidental?
