[photoshop-beginners] cleaning up a photo

I'm trying to clean up a photo. It's a portrait and the face has various
colored splotches all over it. I've been using the spot healing tool for
the most part and it's cleaning up the biggest dark spots but the face
still  just looks like a lot of different colored spots. Is there a way
I can sort of blend them together or something. The smudge tools doesn't
seem to look good.
