[photoshop-beginners] type mask tool in pse 10

HI everyone - I am trying to use the type mask tool in PSE 10 but cant seem to do it. I have a patterned layer and I type the type mask tool over it but only the letter changes color - the whole layer doesnt no matter what I try. Ive been watching you tube videos and cant figure out what im doing wrong. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
