RE: [photoshop-beginners] The refine edge thread

This is the method I would use.  I tried it before I was going to post it as a suggestion and it works very nicely that way.

black signature on white background?  Open image and go to select/color range/highlights.  This should select all the white.  Hit delete and you should have your signature on a transparent background.  got a little fringe around the black?  go to layer/matting/defringe (1 pixel)

The best way I have found to remove the white on a logo is  open logo and unlock the layer. pull up the blending options and more the white slider to the left. To remove the white fringe, hold down alt on a pc and continue dragging half the white slider fruther to the left. Drag just until the blackest part of the logo becomes sllightly transparent and then back off a little. Add a new empty layer below the one we have been working on. Selet the originall layer and merge down..do not flatten.                          Nancy H.

I am wondering if this is the same idea as to cutting out hair in a photo.  I have my signature scanned that I use in doc. and other materials I use but it is on a white background.  I need to make the background transparent but it seems the pen used has many areas that the background will not clear on.

Will this tutorial bring the signature out of the background or is there another way to bring just the signature out of that background?

Thanks,

John Donovan
