I did the same thing in CS6 as Joe and it worked fine for me as well.

I just tried it in CS6 and it looked ok to me. Did you look at the stroke
settings?
Color, blend mode normal, opacity 100%, where the stroke is (outside,
inside, center?)?

I am flummoxed...I hope someone will help. I am trying to create a fine
line outline of a rectangle or square.Using CS4, I select the rectangle
marquee tool, create the shape, then edit>stroke, select 1 pixel and the
result is a shadowed line. I don't know where to go to change this result. I
just want a plain line.
Any help is appreciated....
