I've never used a Canon mp970, but scanning basics will be pretty
much the same as with any other make/model.
Setting a high printer resolution won't affect scanner resolution
(again, because the mp970 is an AIO, that may be incorrect). Check
your user manual for the highest _optical_ resolution the scanner
supports, and use that. Don't bother using interpolated
resolutions, they're just software tricks which are handled better
with Photoshop. Save your scans as tiff files; jpeg tosses some
data with every save, and if you're going through the trouble of
getting the best scan possible it's pointless to start losing data
before you get to use it.
The highest optical res is probably overkill for scanning 4"x6"
prints, but I think it's the best option for archiving.
