I was castigated a few years ago, (back in the age when you could
still buy many different kinds of film) for switching to digital,
shutting down and selling my darkroom stuff and using photoshop (an
evil demon that I struggle with daily). I was told that "real"
photography did not involve all this manipulation stuff.
The internet was sufficiently advanced that I could send him links
with the history of various famous photographers and the darkroom
manipulation techniques that they went through to come up with their
works of genius. He never mentioned it again.
Although I am an amateur when it comes to printing B&W, the science
and complexities of different inks and papers more than matches the
intracies of the darkroom.
