Re: [photoshop-beginners] How to fix blurry photos

High-pass sharpening works best on outdoor scenes and scenes with lots of crossing lines <Think trees>  the trick is to keep the pixel radius as small as possible to get the effect you want without messing up the edges and getting colored "halos" around shapes.  Usually less than 1.8; but there are exceptions...As always.

Other sharpening techniques that are effective are:
Smart sharpen: best used with faces and other soft items.
Unsharp Mask: two ways to use this...High radius and low amount; for similar results as the Highpass filter and Low radius and Large amount for sharpening faces and soft items.

Sharpening is a very specific process to the image you are working on.  That is why there are so many different ways to do it.
Playing around with sharpening is a very good idea for everyone because almost every digital image requires some form of sharpening no matter how tack sharp it is out of the camera.  The space between the pixels in the camera is interpolated <guessed> by the camera as it makes the image file.  This process leaves you with less than perfect edges in an image.

Try different sharpening techniques on the same image:
Compare the results and look for red/blue edges in high magnification.  Also look for noise in the skies. If one technique creates them but another does not...well there you go...
Always create a layer copy before sharpening so that you can reduce the opacity of the sharpened layer to your taste.  Also always look at the image at 100% when sharpening.

Great question and solid process...
