Here is basic gradient tool usage....
1. Open image in RGB or Greyscale
2. Set your foreground color to black by pressing letter 'd'
3. open second image.
4. press 'v' to pick up the Move tool and then drag this image on top of the other, to at least significantly overlap original.
5. In Layers pallette, click on Layer Mask icon at the bottom, 2nd from left?
6. You'll then see another icon next to your thumbnail in that layer on the pallette
7. Choose your Gradient tool and up in the options bar, click the triangle for your dropdown/flyout menu. Pick Foreground To Background gradient.
8. Then, on your image, drag from one point to another to see how the gradient works. You can undo each time to get a feel for how it works. Practice by starting and stopping at different places. Stop before you reach edge of pic, of course, etc.
9. Once you get the image looking close to what you want, if you can't exact it with the tool alone, you can then push your 'b' key on keyboard to grab the brush tool. Then up top, use the dropdowns to choose the brush style....large, soft edge, for example, and begin painting. Paint with black to bring the background image through more. Paint with white to add more mask in certain spots.
Good luck!

Trying to remember what the procedure is for "fading" a picture at the
halfway line into another picture. I know this should be something
utterly basic, but...?
And got this reply:
you mean using a gradient to blend to pics?
I suppose so...?
(Curious to know more...)
