[photoshop-beginners] Photoshop's gone black and white

Hi, I'd be grateful if you could help me. I have Photoshop CS3. The two little coloured squares in the tools menu suddenly turned black and white and now I can't do anything in colour! I've gone to Image/ Mode - but it is not in Grayscale; it's in RGB colour. I tried to google it but found no helpful answer. What has gone wrong? What do I do? Thanks!
