You are in fact adding a shade of Gray to the image.  in order to have shine the object need to have a changing luminosity across it's surface.  I would look at a gradient over the object to change the RGB from 192,192,192 up to 250, 250, 250 from one edge of the surface to the other or use a gradient with a highlight center and adjust the radius.

It is the change in Luminosity you are looking for.
