Layers only effect sharpness if you blur or otherwise adjust the layer. 

A simple layer copy is transparent and very useful...They are one of the most powerful tools in the Photoshop toolbox.

The biggest problem is they can make your file size very much larger...

This is the first time I have heard that having too many layers will make an image "less sharp."

 

I wonder if our experts would like to comment, since all I have read says to make layers for about everything!
