One more thing concerning sharpening: In Photoshop it is a DESTRUCTIVE edit, so either duplicate the image layer and sharpen the copy or work on a completely separate file from the original.  If you try to sharpen a blank layer, it won't do anything.  Sharpening only works on image layers with pixels in it.
