a pattern can be used as a pattern or a texture.  I use them mainly with text.  when used as a pattern it has its original color.  when used as a texture it s color of whatever you are applying texture to.

just in case anyone does not know.

bring up picture,  go to edit,  define pattern. name your pattern.
