The writer probably left out a key.  Here's all the alternative backspace commands.
Try the extra key below that seems to do what you need.

Fill selection with background color	Ctrl-Backspace
Fill selection with foreground color	Alt-Backspace
Fill selection with foreground color using Lock Transparent Pixels	Shift-Alt-Backspace
Fill selection with source state in History palette	Ctrl-Alt-Backspace
Display Fill dialog box	Shift-Backspace

my problem is not in making inverse selection (i am able to do it by keyboard shortcuts as wellas fro menu). after the selection is made, when i hit BACKSPACE, the layer gets deleted (expected result is to change layer color).........
