[photoshop-beginners] Backspace/Alt-Backspace usage - question

hey,

i am trying out the following tutorial.

http://www.tutorial9.net/photoshop/how-to-design-a-speedometer-icon-in-photoshop/comment-page-1/#comment-36934

the tutorial looks really awesome. however i am stuck in step 10. it says "Once we have selected the tool we hit the DOWN ARROW KEY from our keyboard around 10 times (or move the selection down around 10px) and then we do SHIFT+CTRL/OPT+I to inverse the selection and we hit BACKSPACE."

when i press DOWN ARROW KEY 10 times, the selection moves down as desired. but the next step would not work. i could inverse the selection but when i hit BACKSPACE, the layer itself got deleted (base_black).

can someone help?

thanks,
ashiq
