[photoshop-beginners] Learning

I have had PS Elements ever since it came with my Epson Scanner and I've hardly used it for lack of knowledge of how-to.

 

I see there hosts of manuals on Amazon.

Could I get some guidance, please, on the right book to get me off the ground (layers and so on) ?

Something readable yet accurate.

I'm not yet ready for the wayout things.

 

And another question if I may.

My version is Elements 2.0 which I imagine does most things, but I believe versions go up to 9.0 (?).

I don't find any way of upgrading even part way without paying full price for new.

Is there one ?
