Key clue was constant thrashing of hard drive when working in RAM hog programs like Adobe's.
Cure was to shut down auto updates.
With 4 GB AM, you should have no problem, except auto update would still lock up most of RAM, because it claims per cent of available, not a fixed amount.
Your problem may not be the same, but you should check it out.
