Hi Maggie,
Welcome to the wonderful world of Photoshop-- as well as this list. Be
advised that this is an application of tremendous breadth and depth-- a
professional's workhorse, not a hobbyist's toy-- and the only way to
harness its incredible capacities is to buckle down and begin learning
it from the ground up. It's a steep climb, but one that's well worth
the investment of time and effort.
I've been using Photoshop since 1992, and it continues to blow me away
with its continuing advances. Those who attempt to use bits and pieces
of it without ever really learning what they're doing never really get
much out of it and usually continue to depend on Elements or Paint Shop
Pro. But if you're willing to do the work, you'll have something
amazing at your fingertips.
You've come to Photoshop at a wonderful time, as CS5 is by far the best
release I've seen since Photoshop 7, roughly a decade ago. It's not an
overstatement to say that CS5 is capable of magic-- but you have to be
ready to be the magician, and know just how to make the elephant
disappear. Get a good introductory book-- Photoshop CS5 Classroom In A
Book is a good place to start-- or take a class, but by all means give
yourself every possible opportunity to really learn what this program
has to offer.
As for the grid, Photoshop allows the user to to make use of a variety
of grids, guides, rulers, and so on-- and they can be very helpful!
You'll find access to them under the "View" pull-down menu. To turn off
the grid, simply go to View/Show/Grid and click once on the Grid option
to remove the check beside it. The grid will disappear.
Again, welcome!
