[photoshop-beginners] How to clear the previous command?

Hi,

A question on CS2(but could be valid for other versions too).

If I used Pen command (for instance) and completed that step, then by default the same command will still be active. How to come out of this command, without clicking on another similar command? I tried Esc key but it didn't help.
