There is probably an easier way, but I would first try using the Magic Wand to select the background and change the background to black or white (or whatever color you want).  You may have to use the magic Wand on several areas of the background that are not contiguous.  Eventually, you will have selected all the areas that need erased.  Do a search for "removing background" at help.adobe.com  and you will probably find more than enough tutorials on how to do it.  Stay tuned and Joe Tansey will probably have a tutorial on it!!!
