well, Julie....this all sounded like it was going to be the answer.  I made the changes, loaded PS and nothing changed as far as showing which photo was active.  Dang it.    Running XP, Windows 7 and CS4.  The effects don't work in CS4 I guess.  But sure many thanks for your idea.  I'll keep hoping someone knows....

Thank you

I have changed the Active and Inactive title bar colors on my computer and it also changes them in my CS2 program. I don't have CS4 nor do I know what operating system you're using but I will tell you how I did it just incase it helps you some. I change mine frequently because I get bored looking at the same colors for very long.
I am using XP
-Go to Control Panel on your computer.
-Click on the icon labeled "Display"
-then click on the Appearance tab
-at the bottom of the Appearance tab on the right side is the Advanced button...click on that
-That will bring up a box where you can change the colors of the different areas you click on.
-Click on the Active Window area. In the bottom right corner it should say Color 1 and Color 2. Click on the drop-down arrow to change the color and click on "other" to make up the color you want. (Color 1 is the color on the left side and Color 2 is the color on the right side) It will fade from one color to the other.
-Click on the Inactive Window area and choose the colors you want to use there.
-When you are done choosing colors click on the "OK" button and the computer will make the changes.
This will change the colors on your desktop, your regular browsing as well as your photo programs .... it does on mine anyway.

Subject: [photoshop-beginners] Help with CS4 please?

Hello, all... At work here with a 'minor' problem.... :/ With several photos open at once, all of them are grey on the top bar that tells the name of the pic, % of size on screen, etc. In CS, the "active" photo always was a different color, in my case blue, and other open documents were greyed, if you will. Does anyone know how to have the 'active' photo stand out from the others? I can't find any setting to do that. The only thing I did find was a spot to make the extension in lower case...so when I go to 'save' the photo, it changes the pic to blahblah.jpg in stead of the blahblah.JPG it started out at when open. I have to do particular saving of several documents open at the same time on screen, and it's too easy to mistake which one is the active one. Help?? Thanks!!
